It started as a time-saver.
"Write documentation for this codebase," I told the AI. "Include setup instructions, API reference, and deployment guide."
Ten seconds later, I had a 4,000-word README. It looked professional. It had headers. It had code blocks. It had a table of contents.
It was also completely useless.
The "Introduction" was 800 words of marketing fluff: "This cutting-edge solution leverages modern best practices to deliver a seamless experience..."
The "Setup" section said: "Install dependencies and configure your environment."

How to Fix AI-Generated Documentation
If you've already let AI write your docs (like I did), here's the recovery plan:
1. Delete the Introduction
Nobody reads it. Nobody cares about "cutting-edge solutions." Replace it with one sentence: "This app does X."
2. Add the "Gotchas" Section
Create a section called "Common Issues" or "Gotchas." Fill it with everything that's bitten you: undocumented requirements, silent failures, surprising behaviors. This is the most valuable part of any README.
3. Write Real Setup Steps
Every command should be copy-pasteable. Every environment variable should be listed explicitly. Every prerequisite should be stated. "Install dependencies" becomes "Run npm install (requires Node 18+)."
4. Include Error Messages
If someone sees "Error: ECONNREFUSED 127.0.0.1:6379", they should be able to Ctrl+F your docs and find the solution (Redis isn't running). AI doesn't include error messages because it doesn't know what errors occur.
5. Test the Docs
Have someone who hasn't seen the codebase follow the docs exactly. Watch them struggle. Fix what breaks. This is the only way to verify documentation quality.
The context-aware technical docs you need can't be fully generated by AI. They can be scaffolded by AI and completed by a human who knows the context. That's the workflow.

AI-generated documentation is a trap. It looks productive. It feels like you've checked the "documentation" box. But it creates a false sense of security.
Your README needs to answer the question a frustrated developer asks at 11 PM: "Why isn't this working?" AI doesn't know. AI has never felt frustration.
Use AI to generate the skeleton. Use your brain to fill in the tribal knowledge. Test with fresh eyes. Iterate until someone can go from zero to running app without Slacking you.
That's the standard. AI can't meet it alone.
